What to do if you find out you are pregnant
If you receive a positive pregnancy test result, it is important to contact a family doctor or private medical center to begin prenatal registration. You will then be referred to a gynecologist for necessary laboratory and instrumental examinations. The entire course of your pregnancy, as well as the postpartum period, will be monitored by an obstetrician-gynecologist. It is highly recommended to seek medical care and begin supervision as early as possible, ideally in the first weeks of pregnancy.
State-Guaranteed Free Medical Care
Within the framework of free medical care guaranteed by the state, obstetric and gynecological services provided in outpatient settings are generally offered based on population service areas. However, each resident has the right to choose their doctor and obstetrician-gynecologist within their administrative territory, and they can receive medical care from the chosen medical facility.
Eligibility for Free Services
A woman who is a citizen of the Republic of Armenia is entitled to receive free or preferential medical care and services related to pregnancy and childbirth, as part of targeted health care programs guaranteed by the state. Women who are not citizens of Armenia but are married to an Armenian citizen are also entitled to receive free hospital medical care related to obstetrics.
If a non-citizen woman's marriage to an Armenian citizen is not officially registered with the Civil Status Acts Registration (CSR) bodies, but there are factual grounds (e.g., civil marriage and actual residence in Armenia), she may still receive hospital medical care related to obstetrics within the framework of a state order. This is provided by the Ministry of Health of Armenia, the founders of medical organizations (Yerevan Municipality or regional administration), or by the decision of the medical organization's director.
Services for Foreign Citizens
Non-citizens of Armenia married to an Armenian citizen are also entitled to free hospital medical care related to obstetrics.
If the marriage of a foreign citizen is not registered with the CSR bodies but they are in a civil marriage and reside in Armenia, they may still receive state-funded hospital medical care, as determined by the Ministry of Health, local authorities, or the director of the medical organization.
Medical care may also be provided for Armenian residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, the Javakhk region of Georgia, or other foreign nationals living in Armenia who are not citizens but are in need of obstetric care, including childbirth and urgent obstetric pathologies.
Pregnancy care for servicemen of the Russian Federation's Border Guard Troops and their family members stationed in Armenia is provided on a territorial basis, according to their place of residence, with family members receiving the same medical care as Armenian citizens.
Pregnancy Care and Services
Obstetric and gynecological care is provided by an obstetrician-gynecologist, along with a midwife (or family doctor, midwife, or trained nurse in rural areas) as part of a women's consultation. Depending on medical indications, other specialists may be involved, and laboratory and instrumental diagnostics will be organized.
For a normal pregnancy, a woman will typically have at least eight visits: one up to 12 weeks, two during the second trimester, and five during the third trimester. In the case of pregnancy complications, additional visits may be required as per medical recommendations.
Pregnant women also receive socio-psychological support, childbirth preparation, and physical training.
State Benefits for Pregnant Women in Armenia
Maternity Benefit: When and in What Cases is It Granted?
Maternity benefits for employees and self-employed individuals are provided in accordance with the relevant laws and decisions of the Government of the Republic of Armenia. The benefits are granted as follows:
For Employees
Maternity benefit is paid for all calendar days of the pregnancy and maternity leave period specified in the Labor Code of the Republic of Armenia.
For employees who adopt a newborn or are appointed as a guardian, maternity benefits are paid only for the days from adoption or guardianship until the newborn reaches 70 days of age (or 110 days if the employee adopts or becomes guardian of two or more newborns).
In case of premature birth before the 154th day of pregnancy, maternity benefits are paid for the maternity leave period, even if the child was born dead or passed away after birth.
Maternity benefits for a surrogate mother are provided on the same basis. However, the biological mother of a child born through surrogacy receives maternity benefits only for the days following the birth until the newborn reaches 70 days of age (or 110 days for multiple births).
If an employee takes leave to care for a child under three years old, maternity benefits are granted during the pregnancy and maternity leave period, but not beyond the point when the employee returns to work.
For Self-Employed Persons
The maternity benefit for self-employed individuals follows the same conditions and regulations as for employees.
Duration of Pregnancy and Maternity Leave
Pregnancy and maternity leave for employees and self-employed persons are granted as follows:
140 days (70 days of pregnancy leave and 70 days of childbirth leave).
155 days (70 days of pregnancy leave and 85 days of childbirth leave) in cases of complicated childbirth.
180 days (70 days of pregnancy leave and 110 days of childbirth leave) in the case of multiple births.
Maternity Benefit Calculation for Employees and Self-Employed Individuals
The maternity benefit for an employee or self-employed person cannot be less than the benefit calculated for 140 days (or 70 days in the case of premature birth), which is 50% of the minimum monthly salary established at the time of temporary incapacity for work.
For Non-Working Persons
For non-working persons, maternity benefits are provided under the RA Law "On State Benefits" and the relevant Government Decision.
The maternity leave period for non-working persons is 140 days (70 days for pregnancy and 70 days for childbirth).
To calculate the amount of maternity benefit for non-working persons:
Fifty percent of the amount established by the Law of the Republic of Armenia “On Minimum Monthly Wage” is divided by 30.4 (the average number of days in a month) and then multiplied by 140 (the total number of calendar days for pregnancy and maternity leave).
For 140 calendar days of leave, the maternity benefit is 126,645 AMD.
For 70 calendar days of maternity leave, the benefit is 63,323 AMD.
Non-working persons must submit their application and required documents within the period of entitlement to pregnancy and maternity leave to be eligible for the benefit.
